High rainfall forecasted in Kerala: Monsoon Preparedness across the State
As monsoon has entered Kerala, monsoon preparations are underway across the state. The state government is well prepared to avoid natural calamities and losses. A special online meeting of the District Collectors was held to assess the monsoon preparations in the context of the possibility of heavy rainfall in the state during the upcoming monsoon season.
3071 buildings have been identified for resettlement camps, which can accommodate where up to four lakh people. As of now, there are 69 people including 23 families in five relief camps in the state. 24-hour control rooms have been set up on a district and taluk basis to coordinate disaster relief and rehabilitation activities. There is also issued special order for providing an advance amount of Rs.25000 to each village officer in Kerala for coordinating emergency operations.
Due to the possibility of strong winds, applications received at Taluk and Village offices regarding tree felling will be considered and action will be taken on an urgent basis. During the last flood, an alluvial deposit including sand, soil, and trees in the rivers has been removed to facilitate the flow of water.
The control team has been re-designated at the District-Taluk level and training for them has been started. Preparations have already been completed as per the Orange Book, which contains guidelines for dealing with monsoon disasters. Activities will be coordinated with a special focus on plantation areas.
